June, 1997 we went to Peru. Our three weeks touring Peru was a near National Geographic experience. Once we left Lima for Cusco, our timing to be at the right place at the right time was very fortunate. The Inti Raymi festival to mark the summer solstice was underway as we arrived in Cusco. This is a grand pageant marking the arrival of the Inca to officiate at the festival. There were 1,000's of people at the event. A highlight was taking the narrow gauge train to see Machu Picchu. These ruins of the Inca era are situated on a beautifully green mountaintop. The whole Sacred Valley surrounding Cusco and leading to Machu Picchu is filled with important spiritual and cultural ruins. We took the train to Lake Titicaca and spent time exploring the reed islands and Isla Taquile. We also spent two days around Puerto Maldonaldo in the Amazon region of Peru. Our jungle outpost gave us the chance to wander through a small area of the Amazon rain forest.
