June, 1999 we had the opportunity to spend 4 days in Tibet. We spent most of our time in Lhasa, the capital. As you speak to local people it is obvious that while they recognize the advances in transportation, education and medicine that the Chinese government is bring to the area, they are very concerned that at the same time, the influx of Chinese immigrants is replacing the local Buddhist culture. The highlight of our stay in Tibet was spending a day touring the Potala Palace, the home of the Dali Lama, until he was forced to flee the country in the 1959 after China occupied Tibet.
